As a designer, I strive to find bold and clean ways of telling stories and solving problems with a hint of playfulness. I want to find seamless and engaging ways to tell a story between an exhibit and its space, creating a rich, uniform experience.
I have always had a love of museums and the way they can teach and entertain with exhibits in unconventional ways. My first exposure to the idea that there was an art and science to executing exhibits was while studying Anthropology and Museum Studies at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. A good exhibit tells a story, I learned. The design, colors, and feel of a space can be as much a part of the story as the pieces of an exhibition are. When done right, an exhibit can become an unforgettable, immersive experience.
I earned my Master's degree from the George Washington University Corcoran School of Art and Design in Exhibition Design in 2015. There, I learned more practical techniques behind creating visitor-centric experiences. Having to craft an exhibit to communicate a narrative to the audience and find ways for the audience to interact and engage with it further changed how I thought about exhibits from a design and execution standpoint. It made me all the more eager try it for myself - I wanted to become an engineer of experiences.
After my graduate studies, I was hired as Exhibits Graphics Specialist at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, which broadened my practical skill set with graphics production and installation becoming part of my daily routine. My work as the Digital Content Manager / Graphic Designer at Dallas Contemporary plunged me into a brand new world; taking the physical visitor experience and bringing it to a digital platform through social media engagement. This has exemplified what I believe to be a core concept of exhibitions: learning by doing. I hope to continue my growth as a designer by embracing this idea and creating new and different experiences.
